who could have overcome the darkness
For the love of a lousy buck

Chuck Berry doesn’t get the credit he deserves. Watch this performance from 1955. Then take a look at the Top Ten Rock songs from that same year. There are some great songs here but only one of them is what we’d consider rock today. Note that this is not the Top Ten Popular songs. That list was led by “Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White” by Perez Prado. He was ahead of his time. If Chuck was white, he would have been Elvis.

  1. Rock Around the Clock" - Bill Haley & His Comets
  2. Maybellene" - Chuck Berry
  3. Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)" - The Penguins
  4. Ain’t That a Shame" - Fats Domino
  5. Hearts of Stone" - The Fontane Sisters
  6. Black Denim Trousers" - The Cheers
  7. Only You (And You Alone)" - The Platters
  8. Tweedle Dee" - LaVern Baker
  9. "At My Front Door" - The El Dorados
